April 2009

Spring Break
Spring break at the public schools is always the first week in April. This year it runs from March 29th to April 5th. Since many people use this time to travel to vacation spots and to visit out of town relatives, it has been the tradition of this church community to not hold Sunday school classes the Sunday beginning Spring Break. That means there will be no Sunday school on March 29th. There will still be regular church services and childcare for all ages during the service. There is Sunday school on April 5th.

Easter
Easter is almost here—just three weeks away as of this writing. We will celebrate the coming of spring in the usual way. On April 11, we will hold our egg decorating party. Please meet in the Hearth Room at 11:00 am. The RE Committee will supply dozens of eggs for everyone to dye and decorate. We will learn how to do Pysanky eggs. They’re the beautiful Hungarian eggs that take several layers of dyes.

On Sunday, April 12, we will all gather for our annual Easter egg hunt. We divide the property into three sections so we can have a fair hunt for everyone. The play lot is designated for the little ones up to five years of age. The side yard, on the west side of the church, is open to all children in kindergarten through third grade. The upper grades will hunt for eggs in the front yard under the Ponderosa Pine Forest. To begin the hunt, please gather in the Solarium right after the service. If you have any questions at all, please contact Joyce Zaugg.

Coming of Age RE Program
This spring, the Religious Exploration Committee is offering a Coming of Age program for 7th-9th graders. This special program is designed to mark the transition from childhood to youth. A youth is someone who is not yet an adult, but is not a child either. There are four middle school participants in this year’s program.

During Coming of Age, the participants are paired with an adult mentor, who will often join with the class and will guide the youth in their journey to define their religious beliefs. They will discuss spiritual beliefs and values, go on a retreat, watch movies, talk about spiritual aspects, design a service project, talk about the “big questions” in life, write faith statements, play games, get to know each other, and laugh a lot. All of this will end with a final celebration and community recognition at the Flower Communion ceremony in May.

In the past, participants have traveled to Boston to visit the UUA headquarters and other historical places in the area. The students will be developing fundraising events to help pay for the trip, which is planned for this summer. Please help the participants make this special pilgrimage. If you have any questions about the program or would like to make a donation, please contact Joyce Zaugg at dre@uulosalamos.org.
