Our Lives are Co-mingled

[printprofilepic]Justice is sweet and musical, but injustice is harsh and discordant.Henry David Thoreau

During the ingathering on September 12, Rev. John pointed out that we all have a responsibility to ‘carry’ each other, that is, we help each other evolve in wisdom, compassion, joy, awareness, and love. Like the water that intermingles at the water communion our lives are also co-mingled especially as we work for justice.

The Religious Exploration committee has scheduled four Social Justice Sundays for the elementary grades. Youth in 9th-12th grades are also invited to participate with the younger kids on these Sundays. Our first Social Justice Sunday coincides with the kick-off for Guest at Your Table on October 24 (uusc.org/guest). This program is well established in our congregations and asks us to focus on human rights while filling the small Guest at Your Table boxes with money to support the work of the Unitarian Univeralist Service Committee.

On October 24 during the RE class time, our children will make Birthday Bags for the Esperanza Shelter for Battered Families whose purpose is to empower people to live violence-free lives through protection, prevention, awareness, and education. To live safely and without fear is a basic human right.

The RE committee and I know the importance of having the entire congregation involved with this project. Your involvement shows the children that you too, care about this issue of human rights. How can you help?

  • Watch for the giant birthday cake poster to appear in Robinson Hall on October 3
  • Follow directions on the poster
  • Purchase and donate requested items

The kids will decorate the birthday bags, make birthday cards, and assemble the bags with the basic essentials for a birthday: cake mix, frosting, candles, balloons, and more. These birthday bags will hopefully provide a bit of cheer and an indication that someone cares for the birthday boy or girl.

YOUTH NEWS

Thirteen youth and six adults met on September 11 to build community, play games, and share food. This was a kick-off event for what we hope will be a dynamic, fun, and meaningful year for youth in grades 7 - 12. Youth will also participate in social justice work, host a youth conference here, attend RE classes, and plan other special events or activities.
