The UUA’s Nominating Committee unanimously nominated Rev. John Cullinan to fill one of three seats on the Commission on Appraisal. The election will be held at the 2011 General Assembly in Charlotte, North Carolina, June 22-26, when Rev. John will also be receiving his final fellowship during the Service of the Living Tradition.
The Commission on Appraisal consists of nine members with overlapping six-year, non-renewable term. The commission reviews any function or activity of the UUA, which, in its judgment, warrants independent study. The Commission reports its findings to the General Assembly at least once every four years. The work is vigorous and year-round, involving much research, writing, consulting, and hearings. It may operate at times like a mini-think tank in its broad consideration of issues. Past reports have included “Belonging—The Meaning of Membership” and “Engaging Our Theological Diversity”, the latter of which we’ve studied as an adult RE curriculum several years ago. Once elected, Rev. John will be joining the Commission in the middle of its current study “Who’s In Charge Here?—The Complex Relationship between Ministry and Authority” and will also be responsible for choosing and seeing to its completion the next topic of study.
Rev. John’s nomination is an impressive accomplishment and a cause for celebration!
