[printprofilepic]…I have one foot in the door but can’t get in. At least it feels that way. A move, a new job, technology issues, bank fraud… it all makes for an interesting time, and I’m not the only one experiencing a muddy and rough ride lately.
But I hear the wind in the trees, feel the rain on my skin, and am able to sleep thorough the night on an air mattress. I was offered help by two youth in the community and I am reminded of why I am a Unitarian Universalist: the church of the open minds, loving hearts, and helping hands. In spite of the details of life, I can choose to notice the small joys, take a breath and move forward—even if its only a foot in the door.
I am happy to finally be here in Los Alamos. I am learning about all the programs and amazing activities this community has to be involved in.
One upcoming activity is the Tools for Schools program happening August 5 and 6. I am working with Joyce Nickols, coordinator of the project, whose enthusiasm is contagious. From what I understand, it is a popular family social action event that many of our UU families take part in. The back-to school items are purchased through grants and donations to Self Help Inc., and distributed to those students in need. Lots of volunteers are needed, so come lend a hand (or two) to this community project that makes a difference in the lives of our neighbors and friends.
The schedule is as follows:
Friday, August 5: approximately Noon–4 p.m.
- Unload truck and sort school supplies at the Masonic Temple next to the church
- All are welcome to take part—as many hands make light work
Saturday, August 6: 8:30 a.m.
Sharing a continental breakfast
- If you plan to come, we are asking for a small donation of a bag of bagels, a container of cream cheese, fruit (grapes, bananas, oranges, apples), or juice to share. Coffee will be provided.
- Please contact me at deanna@uulosalamos.org so we know what you’ll be bringing.
Beginning at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, and throughout the day, we will organize all items into boxes. It’s a family affair, so jump on your bikes or pile in the wagon and make your way to the Masonic Temple anytime and get ready for fun and fellowship!
Plans are also coming together for the UU Summer Day Camp August 8–12. With the theme of Earth As Our Mother, we will explore and discover ways of gently living on our planet.
We are going, heaven knows where we are going, but we know within.
And we will get there, heaven knows how we will get there, but we know we will.
It will be hard, we know, and the road will be muddy and rough, but we’ll get there,
heaven knows how we will get there, but we know we will.
Woyaya, #1020 from Singing the Journey
I first heard this song several years ago at General Assembly for the UUA, and it comes to mind now at this time of transition for my family and me. I offer it here as a reminder that life is uncertain at times, but with a foot in the door, we’ll get there.
Blessings of Peace,
De Anna Hoyle
