Celebrations of Light
December 28th, 2008 (Sunday)
|
Darkness settles on the land when winter solstice comes. Summer days have left behind bright memories, so warm. Harvest time has passed, left fields and forests bare and cold. Humans kindle flame and fire, to make a merry show. Sun supported with illuminations we create, Festivals of light from all around the hopeful world.

MDD News
On January 23-25, the First Universalist Church of Denver, Colorado will host “Building the Beloved Community: How Do We Talk About Race, Class, and Privilege?” Sponsored by Mountain Desert District Justice Ministries, this workshop will focus on how we talk about race, class and privilege in our congregations and what we can do to create welcoming and inclusive communities. If you are interested in attending, please contact Mike McNaughton.
This spring, congregations in the Mountain Desert District will elect a new trustee to represent the district on the Unitarian Universalist Board of Trustees. You can learn more about all of these events on the Mountain Desert District website: <http://mdduua.org>.
General Assembly 2009
Our own district will host the 2009 General Assembly in Salt Lake City, Utah on June 24-28. This year’s GA program will include UU University, a very successful lay leadership program. The new UUA president will be elected at the 2009 GA. The two declared candidates so far are Rev. Peter Morales of the Jefferson Unitarian Church in Golden, Colorado, and Rev. Laurel Hallman of the First Unitarian Church in Dallas, Texas. If the UUA Board approves the Commission on Appraisal’s draft revision of Article II, containing the Principles and Purposes, the draft will be placed on the agenda for a preliminary vote at the 2009 GA. The final vote is scheduled to take place at the 2010 GA.

Why Do Bad Things Happen?
December 7th, 2008 (Sunday)

Our next Big Question is a sticky one. The traditional theological question is, “If God is good, then why is there evil?” In our own language, we may wonder why, if we’re born with inherent worth and dignity, is there so much human suffering?
Presented by: Rev. John Cullinan.
