<itunes:summary>Podcasts of weekly Sunday sermons delivered by our Rev. John Cullinan and guests at the Unitarian Church of Los Alamos, New Mexico. Visit our web site http://www.uulosalamos.org for more information.

Presented by the Unitarian Church of Los Alamos as an imprint under which sermons and talks by Unitarian Universalists are published and made freely available to all.

Los Alamos, New Mexico is a small mountain community of approximately 18,000 people one hour from Santa Fe. The church is part of the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) Mountain Desert district. Our congregation is midsize, with about 150 active members and about 100 friends. We have an active Religious Exploration (RE) program with 50-60 children enrolled in classes from toddlers to High School. Our church year typically starts in the middle of August and goes into the first week of June with regular services at 9 and 11 am. We also offer an Adult Religious Exploration Forum at 10:15 am. During the summer, we invite many outside speakers to explore a whole range of topics of general interest to the public.

We are a UUA-certified Welcoming Congregation and spearheaded the formation of and are now actively supporting the local chapter of PFLAG. Our vision is to affirm and exemplify our Principles and Purposes as we welcome and include all people of liberal faith, promote justice, encourage religious thought and experience in the best traditions of our heritage, and serve as an active testimony to the future.</itunes:summary>

There is some renewed interest here in humanism. I've described myself as a humanist for decades and recommend people give it a serious look--but a serious look must include noting flaws, both positives and negatives, this morning. (When humanism is described many, many people find that they are at least a little bit humanist.)

<itunes:summary>Presented by: Rev. Dale Arnink, Minister Emeritus Goal: to help the curious know a bit about humanism;to point out some problems for thosewho already know about humanism.--The title was meant to be provocative and thus interesting. Perhaps drawing a few who might otherwise go out of town for Memorial Day Weekend.--Like much of current political statements these days, the title is deceptive and only a 1/2 truth. But Why talk about Humanism anyway?Because a group of people, self-identifying as humanists, have been letting it be known that they have become uneasy in this congregation.-Truth is, many congregations and many groups of humanists are having similar experiences of dis-ease. The problems often manifest themselves around the use of certain words from traditional western religion:Such words as prayer, worship, reverence, God, Church, holy, sacred, mystery, soul, spiritual. I think some of the difference lies in generational differences.Younger folks, and newer UUs, wonder why the older folks get into such a snit. What is the fuss about these words? At the same time, these younger folk may well have their head’s spinning from all the choices and options available in the current, “marketplace of spirituality.” A lesson in History1966 Time Magazine cover had an infamous cover of all black background and large red letters which read, “Is God Dead?” The article inside was about the many leading thinkers who were declaring the death of God.Christians Gabriel Vahanian, Paul Van Buren, William Hamilton and Thomas J. J. Altizer, and the rabbi Richard L. Rubensteinwere theologians who said God had died; theologians should know, right?People from many areas of society chimed in.My conversion from conservative christianity to humanism had occurred two years earlier and I knew God was dead.I mention this to indicate that this was an era of skeptical probing, and critical thinking about religion. Of course not everyone believed God was dead, not everyone was skeptical. But many of us older folks were at that time steeped in skepticism Many, like me, had struggled inwardly, had defied our families and communities, to work our way through to a clarity about the falsehoods of church and scriptural authorities;to freedom from the incredible peer pressureto be true believers, faithful followers;to a reasoned rejection of all things supernatural. We became UU Humanists and found a community of like minds. But it is my sense that in the decades since, skepticism has faded a great deal and has been replaced, to my mind, with a great deal of naive and unquestioning credulity.Well, what did they know?! In a few more years Harvey Cox and others would predict, even, the demise of churches for sure and perhaps organized religion.Instead we have witnessed a world wide resurgence of religions. In this country the marketplace of religions is so full of “stuff” that one hasn’t time to consider them all seriously and so they are, all of them, passively accepted in an attitude of freedom and tolerance, (that’s surely better than Taliban-like attack) accepted as: ‘If it works for them well and good.” Truth, deception, falsehood, adequacy, reliability, justification are issues not raised -- until there is newsworthy scandal!--”What’s the fuss; if it works for them why should I be critical or skeptical; and please accord me the same allowance.” What else characterizes humanists besides skepticism: Humanism is a philosophy, world view, or life stance based on naturalism--the conviction that the universe or nature is all that exists or is real. Humanism serves, for many humanists, some of the psychological and social functions of a religion, but without belief in deities, transcendental entities, miracles, life after death, and the supernatural. Humanists seek to understand the universe by using science and its methods of critical inquiry--logical reasoning, empirical evidence,</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>"Standing on the Side of Love" is a public advocacy campaign of the UUA that seeks to harness love's power to stop oppression. "This is a time of great hope and possibility," say the campaigns organizers, "yet our communities are threatened by the increased prevalence of acts motivated by fear and hate. No one should be dehumanized through acts of exclusion, oppression, or violence because of their identities. In public debates over immigration, LGBT rights, and more, religious people stand on the side of love and call for respect, inclusion, and compassion." This Valentine's Day, we explore how UUs are standing on the side of love in all its forms.Presented by: Rev. John Cullinan</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>In the mid-nineteenth century, Margaret Fuller was considered the most brilliant woman in America. She was a founding member of the Transcendentalist Club in Boston and was an early advocate for women's rights and social justice. In the 1840s, Margaret moved from Boston to New York City to become the first woman social and literary critic of Horace Greeley's New York Tribune. Michael Barnett, M.Div. and M.Ed., will reveal how this extraordinary writer and thinker affected America as she became a foreign correspondent, mother, and revolutionary for the Italian cause.

Presented by: Michael Barnett. Mr. Barnett works as a theologian, educator, and poet. He earned his Master of Divinity Magna Cum Laude from Moravian Theological Seminary in his hometown of Bethlehem, PA, and his Master of Science in Education from Gwynedd-Mercy College in Gwynedd Valley, PA. He has taught religious studies at Gwynedd-Mercy College and religious education and OWL at BuxMont UU Fellowship in Warrington, PA, where he is a member. Michael is a teaching artist in poetry for the Lehigh Valley Arts Council in Allentown, PA, where he works with at-risk youth seeking their GEDs. For nine years, he has created sermons and classes on the Transcendentalists Emerson, Margaret Fuller, and Unitarian minister, Theodore Parker, and the Transcendentalist poets, Emily Dickinson and Walt Whitman.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>This past year, I had the privilege of being one of several ministers from the nebulous group known as "Generation X" to have their voices included in a new collection of essays. The term "Generation X" has had a lot of baggage attached to it over the last two decades, some deserved and some not. This Sunday I reflect on what I and my colleagues have to say about being both a "Rev." and a member of the oft-maligned "Generation X."
